Randomization is an important tool in the design of algorithms, and the ability of randomization to provide enhanced power is a major research topic in complexity theory. Noam Nisan continues the investigation into the power of randomization and the relationships between randomized and deterministic complexity classes by pursuing the idea of emulating randomness, or pseudorandom generation.Pseudorandom generators reduce the number of random bits required by randomized algorithms, enable the construction of certain cryptographic protocols, and shed light on the difficulty of simulating randomized algorithms by deterministic ones.
In the preface to Volume One I promised a second volume which would contain the theory of linear mappings and special classes of spaces im portant in analysis. It took me nearly twenty years to fulfill this promise, at least to some extent. To the six chapters of Volume One I added two new chapters, one on linear mappings and duality (Chapter Seven), the second on spaces of linear mappings (Chapter Eight). A glance at the Contents and the short introductions to the two new chapters will give a fair impression of the material included in this volume.
High-performance message-based supercomputers have only recently emerged from the research laboratory. The commercial manufacturing of such products as the Intel iPSC, the Ametek s/14, the NCUBE/ten, and the FPS T Series – all based on multicomputer network technology – has sparked lively interest in high-performance computation, and particularly in the message-passing paradigm for parallel computation. This book makes readily available information on many aspects of the design and use of multicomputer networks, including machine organization, system software, and application programs.
For centuries, translations of the Bible have obscured our understanding and appreciation of the original text. Now And God Said provides readers with an authoritative account of significant mistranslations and shows how new translation methods can give readers their first glimpse into what the Bible really means. And God Said uncovers the often inaccurate or misleading English translations of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament that quotes from it. Sometimes the familiar English is just misleading.
This is a collection of articles, many written by people who worked with Mandelbrot, memorializing the remarkable breadth and depth of his work in science and the arts. Contributors include mathematicians, physicists, biologists, economists, and engineers, as expected; and also artists, musicians, teachers, an historian, an architect, a filmmaker, and a comic. Some articles are quite technical, others entirely descriptive. All include stories about Benoit. Also included are chapters on fractals and music by Charles Wuorinen and by Harlan Brothers, on fractals and finance by Richard Hudson and by Christian Walter, on fractal invisibility cloaks by Nathan Cohen, and a personal reminiscence by Aliette Mandelbrot.
What if almost everything you know about creating a culture of innovation is wrong? What if the way you are measuring innovation is choking it? What if your market research is asking all of the wrong questions? It’s time to innovate the way you innovate. Stephen Shapiro is one of America’s foremost innovation advisrrs, whose methods have helped organizations like Staples, GE, Telefonica, NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and USAA. He teaches his clients that innovation isn’t just about generating occasional new ideas; it’s about staying consistently one step ahead of the competition.
"When we feel that we aren t enough, or that we aren t good enough, we also fear that we ll never have enough."Money. We love it. We hate it. If we don t have enough, we re struggling to get more. If we do have it, we re fighting to hold on to it. Why does money have to be such a source of anxiety? Is it possible to find a balance? Yes! According to integrative life coach Nancy Levin, the real key to creating financial freedom isn t changing what we do, it s changing how we "feel" and that requires more than just learning how to invest.

"Serial" told Only Part of the StoryIn early 2000, Adnan Syed was convicted and sentenced to life plus thirty years for the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee, a high school senior in Baltimore, Maryland. Syed has maintained his innocence, and Rabia Chaudry, a family friend, has always believed him. By 2013, after almost all appeals had been exhausted, Rabia contacted Sarah Koenig, a producer at "This American Life," in hopes of finding a journalist who could shed light on Adnan s story.
Among the first uses of the computer was the development of programs to model perception, reasoning, learning, and evolution. Further developments resulted in computers and programs that exhibit aspects of intelligent behavior. The field of artificial intelligence is based on the premise that thought processes can be computationally modeled. Computational molecular biology brought a similar approach to the study of living systems. In both cases, hypotheses concerning the structure, function, and evolution of cognitive systems (natural as well as synthetic) take the form of computer programs that store, organize, manipulate, and use information.S
Productively combines elements of programming languages, environments, logic, and inductive inference to produce effective debugging aids. Its use of the PROLOG language provides an efficient implementation of the debugging algorithms.
In the 1830s and 1840s the district of Glendale on the island of Skye was swamped by immigrants cleared from other north Skye estates. The resultant overcrowding and over-use of land caused simmering discontent – not against the incomers, but against the landowners, who regarded their tenants as no more than chattels. This book is a definitive account of what happened when the powder-keg erupted and a full-scale land-war ensued. Pitched battles with police, factors and bailiffs, military intervention, arrests, trials, imprisonment and the personal intervention of the Prime Minister were to have huge consequences for crofters all over the Highlands, who, ultimately, were the victors.
Topological insulators are insulating in the bulk, but process metallic states present around its boundary owing to the topological origin of the band structure. The metallic edge or surface states are immune to weak disorder or impurities, and robust against the deformation of the system geometry. This book, the first of its kind on topological insulators, presents a unified description of topological insulators from one to three dimensions based on the modified Dirac equation. A series of solutions of the bound states near the boundary are derived, and the existing conditions of these solutions are described.
THIRTY FIVE YEARS OF AUTOMATING MATHEMATICS: DEDICATED TO 35 YEARS OF DE BRUIJN’S AUTOMATH N. G. de Bruijn was a well established mathematician before deciding in 1967 at the age of 49 to work on a new direction related to Automating Mathematics. By then, his contributions in mathematics were numerous and extremely influential. His book on advanced asymptotic methods, North Holland 1958, was a classic and was subsequently turned into a book in the well known Dover book series. His work on combinatorics yielded influential notions and theorems of which we mention the de Bruijn-sequences of 1946 and the de Bruijn-Erdos theorem of 1948.
In recent years, model checking has become an essential technique for the formal verification of systems. With a clarity of presentation and its many illuminating examples, this book makes this technical material easy to grasp. It is perfectly suited for an advanced undergraduate or graduate class in formal verification and will serve as a valuable resource to practitioners of formal methods.
This book provides the first systematic treatment of modules over discrete valuation domains which plays an important role in various areas of algebra, especially in commutative algebra. Many important results representing the state of the art are presented in the text which is supplemented by exercises and interesting open problems. An important contribution to commutative algebra.
Including over 250 radiographic images and a question-and-answer format, this book is primarily aimed at students approaching the film-viewing session of the final Fellowship of The Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) examination. It is also valuable, however, as a general self-assessment text for Members of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) and Fellows of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) for whom radiology plays an increasingly important role. The format parallels the final FRCR examination, with mock papers of eight cases representing all forms of imaging and pathologies.
This book presents thoroughly revised tutorial papers based on lectures given by leading researchers at the International Training School on Domain Modeling and the Duration Calculus, held in Shanghai, China, as an associated event of ICTAC 2007. Topics addressed in detail are: development of real-time systems, domain engineering using abstract modeling, the area of duration calculus, and formal methods like language description using the operational semantics approach.
Commencing with the Reed Review, this book is about policy and strategy developments, and the implementation of the ensuing chages by forensic mental health nurses. Services and units around the country are at different stages of development, which is reflected in this work.
The disparity between excellence and equity is a key issue for education policy and practice. This book is an argument for equity and inclusion in education, based on a model of social justice which is grounded in relationships and learning rather than policies and structures. Countries that combine excellence with equity, where young people experience high levels of wellbeing, tend to be societies with a commitment to social justice, equity and inclusion. There is an increasing recognition that long term educational and social reforms have to focus on issues around social justice if they are to be more than palliative responses.E
